A life of microbes...or how to grow food…in sand :)
I actually started reading about soil enhancement and I can only recommend this book Teaming with Microbes by Jeff Lowenfels and Wayne Lewis. They discuss how healthy soil is teeming with life. Not only worms and insects but also, fungi, microorganisms and what we call, beneficial bacteria.
This is where I stumbled upon the Bokashi method. It is a very simple yet effective way to recycle your kitchen wastes. From greens to meat scraps, all go into the Boksahi bucket and, once mixed with dormant bacteria in the shape of a bran, a pickle effect will start decompose the leftovers.
A leachate or compost tea can be extracted off the bucket and used to add more beneficial bacteria to your garden.
